Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.67) vs. Jered Weaver (6-4, 2.10)
The Yankees say they haven’t thought about removing Nova from the rotation, but he needs to show better consistency. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last start at Seattle and had no command of his fastball, according to manager Joe Girardi.
He didn’t get a win in his last start, but Weaver was back in prime-time form, holding the Twins scoreless across nine innings on two singles and two walks, striking out seven. He threw a season-high 128 pitches and can use the extra day off.
Saturday, 6/4/11, 9:05 PM EST
C.C. Sabathia (6-3, 2.98) vs. Dan Haren (5-3, 2.29)
The ace goes for his fourth straight win, having gone at least eight innings in his last three starts. Sabathia limited the Mariners to a run on five hits his last time out and has a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts, spanning 25 innings.
Haren had been pitching in terrible luck without run support, but it finally arrived on Sunday in Minnesota on a day he didn’t have his quality stuff. He made it through six innings without an out pitch, testimony to his guile and intelligence.
Sunday, 6/5/11, 3:35 PM EST
Bartolo Colon (3-3, 3.26) vs Ervin Santana (3-4, 4.34)
Colon fired his first complete game since 2006 in his last start, limiting the A’s to four hits in a shutout. The 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner with the Angels, Colon faced his former team in 2009 and defeated them with 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball.
Santana struggled early in his last start, allowing six runs through the opening two innings in Kansas City. But he regrouped to work four scoreless innings thereafter.
