How on earth did C.C. not make this team?
I agree with you Matt. CC should have made the team as well as Robertson. The thing with CC is that even if he had made the All-Star team, he can’t play because he pitches on Sunday. A bunch of pitchers on this roster pitch on Sunday, so there might be room for Robertson at least if some of the pitchers back out or they become disqualified to pitch. But then again, there were too many Yankees to begin with.
Welcome back Patrick. and Delia i agree Robertson should def be on the team as well.
How do guys like CC & Robertson get screwed? Despite many changes to the selection process, it is still far from perfect.
Fans choose the 9 starting position players but most of the reserves (17) are taken from the players’ votes. They choose 1 reserve at each position plus 8 pitchers (5 starters & 3 RPs). The actual team managers only get to select about 7 players each but they must make sure all teams are represented.
CC was the 6th starter on the players ballot behind Verlander, King Felix, J.Weaver, Beckett & James Shields. Can’t really argue with those 5 selections. The lazy selections were the 3 RPs…… Mariano, Chris Perez & Brandon League. They are the top 3 in Saves but League probably didnt deserve it.
That left 7 picks to be made by manager Ron Washington, however, he still had to take a player from KC, OAK, MIN & BAL. He took middle reliever Aaron Crow as KC’s sole rep. This kept Robertson off because although he is better, KC had to send a player.
He also took Gio Gonzalez as OAK’s only player. Gio’s having a great year but CC would probably have been picked over him if OAK didn’t have to have a player. Cuddyer & Wieters were picked for MIN & BAL leaving only 3 more players for Washington to take.
He took 3 pitchers, David Price, Jose Valverde and his own ace starter CJ Wilson. All are having good years but CC is still better. Maybe Washington omitted CC because he knew he was ineligible to pitch anyway since he starts on Sunday? But he still should have been named and later replaced like several others selected.
Actually, this rule may get Robertson added. Verlander, Felix & Shields all pitch Sunday so must be replaced. CC, Jon Lester, Dan Haren & Trevor Cahill would be good replacements but they all pitch Sunday too (as do Carasco, Baker & Harrison). DRob is definitely the next best reliever available leading ALL A.L RPs with a 1.4 WAR. If I were Washington I’d take Robertson, Sergio Santos and a lefty……maybe Ricky Romero, or Scott Downs.
In reality, I don’t really care about the All-Star game. The game itself is boring and there will always be good players snubbed and bad selections.
I’d like to see baseball add a Future All-Star Game like the NBA does. Maybe a 27 & under All-Star game to be played before the actual game or a Skills competition like Hockey.
the question is how did washington forget to take mark texiera who is having a great year with the bat and the glove. I think @Delia would also agree with this and everyone else.
agreed Kartik and if Texiera made the all star game he was going to participate in the homerun derby that would have been fun to see.
Matt, yup it would have been good to see mark texiera in the homerun derby also
