ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that if J.C. Romero isn’t called up by the Nationals soon, he’ll opt out of his deal and sign a minor league contract with the Yankees.
It’s not clear when Romero’s opt-out date is, but it’s obviously coming up. He’s pitched well at Triple-A Syracuse since signing in late June, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five over seven innings. The Nats seem likely to grant him his wish and promote him, but it appears the Yanks, who are in desperate need of left-handed relief help, will be there to scoop him up if he’s available.
