Oswalt News…

Oswalt News

by Matt S.

According to Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York, the Yankees are “very
worried” about Roy Oswalt’s history of lower back problems.

Oswalt has two degenerative disks in his lower back and while
he has never had surgery, he has received numerous cortisone shots in recent
seasons. The Yankees are expected to make a play for a starting pitcher this
winter, but if Matthews’ source can be believed, it’s unlikely they will take a
chance on the veteran right-hander.

Hot Stove Targeting: Roy Oswalt

Could be a nice number 2.

As expected, the Phillies opted out of Roy Oswalt’s $16 million contract for 2012 by giving the 34-year-old a $2 million buyout.  Oswalt was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts this season, and the main issue may be with the back problems that flared up at midseason. “I think that issue is behind him, hopefully,” Oswalt’s agent, Bob Garber, tells MLB.com. “He knows how to manage his back a lot better than he has in the past.”

(I) Positives

Oswalt is a household name to many as he was the top guy in Houston’s system.  He didn’t have much support for him though and being on a team like the Phillies or maybe next year with the Yankees wins should be much easier for him.  He throws a lot of strikes and get’s a lot of K’s  He averages 180 K’s per year which is good.  His average ERA is 3.21 which isn’t to bad and with all the run support he could get on the Yankees he would do just fine.  He is only 33 years old as well so he is not an old pitcher.  The Yankees could look to offer him a 1 or 2 year deal.  Below are some of his stats through the last five years.

Year Tm ERA SO WHIP H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
2007 HOU 3.18 154 1.325 9.4 0.6 2.5 6.5 2.57
2008 HOU 3.54 165 1.179 8.6 1.0 2.0 7.1 3.51
2009 HOU 4.12 138 1.241 9.1 0.9 2.1 6.8 3.29
2010 HOU 3.42 120 1.109 7.6 0.9 2.4 8.4 3.53
2010 PHI 1.74 73 0.895 5.8 0.7 2.3 7.9 3.48
2011 PHI 3.69 93 1.338 9.9 0.6 2.1 6.0 2.82

(II) Negatives

With the Trainer is something to common lately with Oswalt

Back Back Back.  Yes his back is an issue.  He has been on the DL a couple times the last couple years so that is an issue.  Do you want to give someone years with an issue like that.  His k/9 has gone down so that’s something to maybe be worries about. Also his hits per 9 have went up from 2010 to 2011.  Again was it the injuries that caused that so maybe he wasn’t himself. He is also a Type A free agent so the Yankees would lose a draft pick if they signed him.  He is also from a small town and not much of a lime life kind of guy.  That may not translate well in New York.  Where he could hide in Houston or even in Philly.  New York is a different beast.  New York has a lot more papers, local media and other outlets where he would have to field way more questions than he is use to.

(III) A Fit for the Yanks?

I am not convinced either way.  Would I want him though Yes.  Would I be pissed if they get him and his back has issues again Yes.  But that is the risk sometimes that you have to take.  Now that C.C. is locked up he could be a great number two and really doesn’t have to be the lead dog.  Also so many ego’s on this team he could get lost in the mix.  He is getting towards the end of his career so he might want to pad his stats with wins and other things like that so being on the Yankees could be would be good to him.   He is never in trouble or a guy you need to worry about so a fit with the Yankees I would say yes.

(IV) latest rumblings/rumors (MLBTR)

The latest from MLBTR was this:

Roy Oswalt could be a fit for the Rockies if he has an open mind about pitching in Denver, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (on Twitter). The Rockies will be looking to trade for starting pitching or sign pitchers to short-term deals this offseason. The Phillies officially declined Oswalt’s 2012 option earlier today.

All in all I would not be upset if the Yankees didn’t get him but I think a player of his like would be great for this club.  I would only like him as a 1 or 2 year deal though.   Maybe with his age he might be looking for something bigger than this.  You have to feel that you already have C.C. Nova and I believe the Yankees will try Hughes again.  Also from hearing Cashman’s interview today they really want to try Noesi as a starter.  So one more pitcher is needed.   I did not forget about A.J. but it also seems the Yankees might try to trade him in the off season if they could find a sucker.

So What are your thoughts?  Do you like Oswalt as a Yankee?  Or not so much?
