  1. just heard Beltran’s agent came to the Yankees with the same deal he got with St. Louis and the Yankees turned him down.

  2. I can’t see to many teams if any wanting Soriano and than trading a starting pitcher in return. Would be nice though.

    • Matt, suppose the Yankees were able to trade Soriano for and free up $20MM of say the $26MM he’s owed. They could then turn that $20MM that they saved by trading Soriano into a starting pitcher like Kuroda or Oswalt. And in effect on a 1 year deal for each of those pitchers the Yankees would actually come out ahead in dollars. Save $20MM over 2 years but only spend about $12MM for 1 year.

That scenario would give them the dollars this year to make that deal. Deals they are apparently not willing to make this off season so far because of their unwillingness to exceed whatever their budget limit is.

      • I just can’t see any other team wanting a closer who is owed that much money.

        • I don’t know that there would be any takers. But if you think about it. Look at what Bell signed for with the Marlins 3 yrs/$27MM = $9MM per.

2 years/$20MM for a younger closer in Soriano isn’t that bad of a deal by comparison. If the Yankees ate $6MM of the $26MM he is still due.

Granted Soriano hasn’t been a closer for as long as Bell and had some injury issues but he’s also a little over 2 years younger than Bell. And their overall numbers are not that dissimilar. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think it will happen but it isn’t as far fetched as it may sound.

          • trust me i’m all for it. I never wanted Soriano and from what we all know now neither did Cashman. I think it’s absurd how much he is costing the Yankees.
