Morning Bits: Colon, Best Trade Ever, Damon

Morning all.  What a whirl-wind of a weekend with the trade and the signing of Kuroda.   I wonder what else the Yankees have in store for this week.   Check back often for the latest as it happens.

Now on to the links…..

* ESPN’s Marchand says thanks for the memories to Bartolo Colon.

* Harper of the Daily News thinks Cashman made his best trade ever by acquiring Pineda.

* Andy Martino of the Daily News has an article about bringing Damon back to the Yankees.

* From the Boston Herald Scott Lauber says Yankees forcing Sox to make pitch.

  1. If anyone has noticed the countdown to pitchers and catchers reporting on the right hand side of the page has now moved from months to DAYS!!!! Love it!

  2. Here is my opinion on the Yankees & Johnny Damon: Where does he sign?

  3. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees only have $1-$2 million to spend on a DH.

    • That’s probably true. Until or unless Hal thinks there is an option out there to improve the team and then who really knows how much the Yankees have to spend.

Also not that I place a lot of credence in the rumor for the link I posted above. But a trade with the Royals that includes Hughes and another piece for Billy Butler of KC might only require the Yankees to bump up their payroll for 2012 by $3 or $4MM dollars. Maybe not even that much depending on all the pieces.

      Food for thought.

    • $2MM should be enough to get either Matsui or Damon – but no way for Pena.

  4. Here is who I have as the Yankees opening day roster players as of today:

    Rodriguez, Alex
    Sabathia, CC
    Teixeira, Mark
    Jeter, Derek
    Burnett, A.J.
    Rivera, Mariano
    Cano, Robinson
    Soriano, Rafael
    Swisher, Nick
    Granderson, Curtis
    Kuroda, Hiroki
    Garcia, Freddy
    Martin, Russell
    Hughes, Phil
    Gardner, Brett
    Jones, Andruw
    Logan, Boone
    Robertson, David
    Nova, Ivan
    Nunez, Eduardo
    Pineda, Michael
    Wade, Cory
    Cervelli, Francisco

If I did my math correctly that comes to 23 players. Any thoughts on who the other 2 might be – OR – Changes to the list as shown?

    • if Cesar Cabral pitches in spring training like he did in winter ball you would have to believe he would be one of them.

      • …and the Yankees still need to add a DH or combo DH/utility player.

Come to think of it the spots allocated for the Yankees pitchers (both starters and relievers) when Chamberlain comes back is going to be awfully crowded. Someone from the list above will have to go. If the Yankees only intend to carry 12 pitchers.
