Good evening everybody.

Let’s recap today’s events:

— The Yankees and Brett Gardner avoided arbitration and settled on a $2.8MM salary in 2012 – the mid-point between his asking price and the Yankees’ offer.

— Via Mark Hale, Jorge Posada will announce his retirement at a press conference on Tuesday of next week.

— The Yanks lost a very plausible DH option in Carlos Peña today, as the slugging lefty signed with the Rays for 1 year at $7.25MM.

Although it would have been nice for the Yankees to sign Peña, he may have taken a bit of a discount to return to the Rays organization. I don’t really think that the Yankees would have been willing to spend much closer to the $10MM mark. There are still options though, as players like Wilson Betemit and Johnny Damon are free agent possibilities.

Here’s your open thread. Enjoy the night.

  1. Good to see Gardner signed up. Not like i was worried but glad it’s done.

  2. According to Ken Davidoff of New York Newsday, Jesus Montero has dealt with his visa issue and is scheduled to travel from Florida to Seattle on Friday for his physical with the Mariners.

  3. Well if A-Rods comment about the DH being a “revolving door” ring true then it would appear the Yankees have 2 opening day roster spots to fill.

One in all likelihood being the utility infielder and one being another bullpen arm at least until Joba gets back.

If they do intend to get a DH maybe Raul Ibanez is the option. I guess we will see at some point, about a month or so until spring training.

    • you mentioned Ibanez the other day and from looking at his stats why not. He still produced last year at a higher age what says he can’t do it again this year?

  4. Gentlemen, FYI:

The Jesus Montero-for-Michael Pineda swap is finally close to being official

The multi-player deal between the Yankees and Mariners headlined by Jesus Montero and Michael Pineda is moving closer to completion.

Montero was delayed from taking a physical due to weather, plane and visa problems in his native Venezuela, but Larry Stone of the Seattle Times reports that the 22-year-old arrived in the United States yesterday and was en route to Seattle.

The Pacific Northwest was rocked by a pretty nasty winter storm this week, so there’s no guarantee Montero’s travel plans went off without a hitch. However, assuming no problems with his flight and scheduled physical, an official announcement could happen within the next day or two.

The deal between the Yankees and Mariners, which was agreed upon last Friday, will send Montero and right-hander Hector Noesi to Seattle for Pineda and prospect right-hander Jose Campos

  5. I believe that most physicals dont’ take place on the weekends. I could be wrong. So i’m sure it gets cleared and processed by Monday or Tuesday.

    • Matt, FYI:

      AL East Links: Montero
By Mike Axisa [January 21 at 11:03pm CST]
Jesus Montero has arrived in Seattle following a visa/passport issue, reports MLB.com’s Greg Johns. He underwent his physical today, but a formal announcement of the trade sending him from the Yankees to the Mariners isn’t expected until Monday.
