Open Thread: Fantasy Baseball, Jeter, Guerrero, Burnett

Good evening all lots of chatter tonight about A.J. Burnett.  Also some of the Yankees have arrived to the spring training complex which is a great sign.  Here are some news and notes to get you going.  Any thoughts share them in the comments section.

* First off our writer Matthew B. started our first ever Yankee Fans Unite Fantasy Baseball league.  The league is half way filled so if you want in and even if your new to fantasy baseball give it a try.  Click the link for all the information.

* The New York Post has a story about Jeter calling the new additions to the American League “scary”

* Newsday writer Erik Boland has a nice piece about Jeter beginning his 20th year in Yankee pinstripes.

* Sports Illustrated mentions that Vlad Guerrero wants to play for the Yankees.

The latest I have from Heyman came around 3:45 involving AJ

Enjoy the nite.  Check back for updates.

  1. I hope the Pirates don’t get pissed and just walk away. I doubt any of the other teams in the mix will be giving that much money.

    • Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. I don’t think it will. It would seem the Yankees have to put this to bed in the next day or so. They still need to sign a DH and potentially a utility infielder to spell A-Rod once in a while unless they stay in house for that position.

  2. if it was where it was on Friday how is that good?

  3. So right now Pittsburgh will give $10M and 2 blah prospects.

Yanks want $10M and either Garrett Jones or 2 solid to good prospects

    OR

    $13-15M and 2 blah prospects

So its just a matter of time and negotiation to see what happens….I’m hoping for $10M and 2 solid prospects but why in the world would Pittsburgh give up any prospects worth anything? They clearly need all of the young talent they have so I’d expect them to throw in the extra $3-5Million before they throw in a useful young player.

Perhaps the hold up is they are trying to involve a 3rd team that would give the Yanks a LH bat or a decent prospect or 2 for the extra money Pittsburgh throws in.

    • I don’t see a 3rd team getting involved here. The trade will probably happen either today (Tuesday) or tomorrow with Pittsburgh kicking in $12MM and 2 so so prospects.

I define “so, so prospects” as between decent and blah.

  4. I was just thinking, and since today appears to be going along rather slowly with “new” AJ news I thought I might share my thoughts.

It’s about the Yankees purported desire to get at or under the 2014 MLB Luxury Tax Threshold for 2014. It would seem to me we fans will have a very clear indication if that desire is real of imagined prior to the 2013 season.

The Yankees will have to decide what to do with Swisher and Martin after the 2012 season. Both are FA and the Yankees will need to decide if they want to make them an offer they can’t refuse. If they do extend that offer there is virtually no way the Yankees will be able to get under the $189MM 2014 luxury tax threshold. Because with just 6 players (A-Rod, CC, Tex, Jeter and Swisher and Martin) the Yankees will have approximately $115MM tied up in them alone. And that does NOT include what to do about Cano and or Granderson who are FA’s in 2014.

Food for thought. We may know as early as the start of the 2013 season what direction the Yankees are planning for the 2014 season.

  5. Hamilton is way to fragile to survive in NY,ain’t never gonna happen.Com on guys you can do better than that.
