– Eric Chavez was added to the roster but someone had to go to the minor leagues. Eduardo Nunez was sent to the minors after a 2 error game.
– Although the Yankees aren’t skeptical, Brett Gardner stressed that his setback isn’t much to worry about. He says it hurts when he swings and misses more than when he makes contact.
Enjoy the game everyone!
Good Signs From Hughes?

Phil Hughes continues to be the biggest enigma on the Yankees. Despite having much better stuff than last year the results have not been there yet for Hughes. Hughes is 2-4, with a 6.67 ERA, and a 1.48 WHIP on the year. With Mariano Rivera going down and Andy Pettitte returning some have suggested Hughes be shipped to the bullpen. I do not agree with that assessment as I have seen some things recently from Hughes that should lead to better success. I do not believe it is quite time to give up on him yet.
The two big improvements I have seen from Hughes are that he has completely scratched his cutter and he is mixing it up with 2 strikes better. As I was watching Hughes early in the year I asked myself why does he throw his cutter so much? To me it seemed to be a very flat pitch that sat up in the zone at 89-90 MPH ready to get tattooed, and most of the time it did. Hughes’ cutter has the highest line drive %, fly ball %, BABIP, 2nd highest HR% to his changeup, and the lowest whiff % out of all his pitches on the season. In Hughes’ 1st 4 starts he threw 16, 13, 6, and 7 cutters respectively. Over his last two outings, which were both good outings, he threw only 1 cutter in both outings. To take the place of his cutter Hughes threw 12 changeups and 19 curves against Kansas City and 27 curves and 5 changeups against Baltimore. Read the rest of this entry

Morning Bits: Pettitte, Robertson, Soriano, Gardner, Minor Notes…
Good morning all. Great outing from C.C. last night. Cano looks back to form now we just to wake up Tex. New series tonight against the Mariners. Enjoy the weekend.
Now onto the links….
– John Harper of The Daily News writes who will save the team Robertson or Soriano?
– Andy Pettitte says, “It’s time now” writes Marc Craig of The Star Ledger.
– Craig has another story about Gardner and his setback. This is not good news for the Yankees.
– Here is the story from last nights Empire State Yankees (AAA) win in extra innings from The Columbus Dispatch.
– From The USA Today, MLB is looking to stop the pick off 1st and 3rd trick move.
– Yankees Prospect Brett Marshall shines as Trenton (AA) blanks Portland, 7-0.
– The Offense exploded yesterday for Charleston (A) as they won 15-3.
CC throws 8 strong innings as Yanks defeat Rays 5-3
The Yankees turned to CC Sabathia for the game deciding series and in the end it turned out well as the Yankees beat the Rays 5-3.
CC ACES HIS TEST: CC Sabathia pitched 8 innings of 2 run ball as he showed why he was the Yankees ace. Sabathia’s both runs were unearned since Eduardo Nunez made errors both in the 1st and 2nd inning. Nunez was eventually lifted in the 6th inning in favor of Jayson Nix. This is Sabathia’s 4th start in a row that he has pitched into the 8th inning.
GARDNER HAS A SETBACK: The Yankees were expecting to have Brett Gardner back tonight to finish the Tampa Bay series but he had a minor setback after complaining of soreness and swelling in his elbow. The Yanks sent Gardner for an MRI and revealed that Gardner re-strained his muscle in his elbow. The plan is to have Gardner not pick up a bat for 10 days but the Yankees might not have Gardner back for another 15-25 days. This is a big blow to the Yankees but it not as bad as percieved before the game. There is no structual damage so he avoided the worst case scenario.
TEIXIERA CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE: Mark Teixiera isn’t winning any brownie points with the Yankees fans after another bad day at the plate. Teixeira is hitting .212 with 4 HR & 17 RBI’s. Can anyone say ‘move Tex down in the order?’ Anyone?
WHAT’S NEXT: Jesus Montero returns to the Bronx but this time in a Seattle Mariners uniform. The Yankees will have a 3 game set vs. the Mariners. Hiroki Kuroda will get the start tomorrow, Ivan Nova will get the start on Saturday and Andy Pettitte who is making his 2012 debut will get the start on Sunday.
