Yanks power past crosstown rivals in 9-1 victory over Mets
It was first night of the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium and the Yankees made sure to treat their crosstown rivals the New York Mets to a laser show. Hiroki Kuroda pitched very well until he got injured in the 7th inning and the Yankees bats woke up in a 9-1 victory over the Mets.
The Yankees bats consisted of a lot of HR’s tonight: 2 2-run shots by Robinson Cano, One HR by Nick Swisher and one HR by Andruw Jones. 3 of the 4 homers were back to back to back. The last time the Yankees hit a back to back to back games was in August of 2009 vs. the Baltimore Orioles when Nick Swisher, Robinson Cano & Melky Cabrera all went yard. The Yankees also learned how to hit with RISP after A-Rod hit a SAC Fly, Nick Swisher double and an Andruw Jones single.
Hiroki Kuroda however was the star of the night going 7 shutout innings of 1 hit ball before getting hit in the foot with a baseball which forced him from the game. Kuroda however has a left foot contusion which means it’s bruised and not broken. There’s no timeable as to when Kuroda will return.
Brett Gardner did a rehab assignment tonight with the Charleston River Dogs (I gave updates throughout the night on my Twitter account) and Gardner had a good game. He went 1 for 3 with a SB, a single and a run scored. If all goes well this weekend, the Yankees will see Gardner in Atlanta on Monday to play against the Braves (which ironically was Gardner’s favorite team growing up as a kid).
David Robertson will do a rehab assignment in Triple A in Rochester and will either start tomorrow or Sunday.
Tomorrow the Yankees will send Phil Hughes out on the mound against Dillon Gee of the Mets. The game is a FOX game and will start at 7:05pm.
