    • Nova had increased inninga last year which has caused him to be sub par this year. All good teams have to deal with innings for young pitchers. Hughes had the same thing happen to him last year. The innings don’t appear to be the whole story with Nova, the location of his pitches and the lack of bite on his off speed pitches have also been a problem.

      • Doug, Nova did not have increased innings last year (2010 – 187ip, 2011 – 181ip) and he hasn’t look fatigued at all this year. His velocity is actually slightly up from last yr and he’s seen a huge uptick in his K rate from 5.3 to 8.1 K/9.

His problem this year is all about command and finding himself as a pitcher. Last year he had success as an extreme GB pitcher who threw his hard sinking fastball 62% of the time. He didn’t strike people out but he also didn’t give up HRs and was successful. However, he has tried to develop into more of a strikeout pitcher this yr by throwing his Slider and Curveball a lot more. While this has led to more Ks when he throws effective breaking balls, he just hangs WAY too many of them which is why he has gone from a GB pitcher to the one who currently leads MLB in Xtra Basehits and has seen his HR rate more than double from 0.71 to 1.50 HR/9.

He needs to throw his sinking Fastball more (down 8% from last yr) and concentrate on finishing his breaking pitches. Right now, his consistency with those pitches is terrible. He’ll throw a great run low and away then come back and throw a hanging cement-mixer right over the heart of the plate on the next pitch. He’s hurting the team right now with these big innings but he’s only 25 and shows potential to be a solid #3 type starter for years IF he cangain consistency and command.

      • yeah Doug i was just gonna say like Fish that innings is not the issue. His stuff is better than it was last year but his location has just been absolute crap.

        • Matt and fishjam, my mistake about the innings! It’s all about location, location, location. Seems like Hughes has taken a step forward while Nova has taken a step back, sometimes pitching those extra innings in the playoffs can effect pitchers the next year. I seem to remember Nova breaking down at the end of last year in the playoffs, but I could be wrong. Only the elite pitchers can do it every year.

  1. Looks like another elite pitcher shut down our all or nothing HR hitters again. Get ready for this to happen in the playoffs. We need a multidimensional offense. Put Nunez in now and get him comfortable for the playoffs. SPEED KILLS ™

    • We are one and one agains’t Verlander this year, we beat Verlander at home or at least hit him that game. Good pitching always beats good hitting.

    • Doug – remember POWER HURTS, BUT, SPEED KILLS(tm).

  2. TWASP would have preferred this team.

    A. Jackson CF
    D.Jeter SS
    M. Cabrera RF
    R.Cano 2b
    Tex 1b
    Ibanez /jones DH
    Montero C
    Nunez/Chavez 3B
    Gardner LF

    • Well that can’t happen cause Gardner is injured. You really wanted them to keep Austin Jackson over Curtis when that trade was made?

    • Wow….that’s some awsome lineup ^^^^^^^.

      Speed -Gardner, Jackson, Nunez, Jeter,

Power – cano, Tex, Ibanez/Jones, Montero

Batting avg. – Cabrera, Cano, Jackson, Jeter

Defense – what an OF! Gardner, Jackson, Cabrera…..

  3. That’s the thing Matt unless you have been crying about not having Austin Jackson the last 2 yrs ,and if you say you were chances are you are most likely lying, than you can’t start crying this year after the fact.

    • If you remember, I was against breaking up the 2009 team and criticized getting Granderson because his #s were trending downward. However, Grandy has exceeded my expectations and has hit lefties and had a very productive 2011. I think leading the league in runs scored and run batted was a great accomplishment.
