Morning Bits: Phelps, Rodriguez, Pettitte
Good morning everyone. Last night the Yankees saw their lead shrink to just 2 games after they looked lost against Miguel Gonzalez. They face Wei-Yin Chen today and Phelps takes the mound for the Yankees. Here are the morning links.
– With Wei-Yin Chen on the mound for the Orioles the main question is, can David Phelps beat him?
– Alex Rodriguez played a rehab game with the Class-A Yankees yesterday and he went 0 for 3 with a walk.
– Andy Pettitte pitched off of a mound yesterday and threw 2o pitches. Joe Girardi’s next step is for Pettitte to do a full bullpen session with 35-40 pitches– the same kind of bullpen session Pettitte would do between starts.

TEAM UPDATE:::::
Cano is 13 for last 62, 210 avg over last 18 games (17 starts), with only 6 runs and 4 rbi
Granderson is 12 for last 67, 179 avg over last 21 games (19 starts), with only 5 runs but 13 rbi
Teixeira is 6 for his last 31, 194 avg, over his last 9 games, and has missed 6 games in that span, with only 1 run and 4 rbi
Martin is 11 for his last 57, 193 avg, over his last 17 games (15 starts), and has only 3 runs and 5 rbi
Chavez is 7 for his last 32, 219 avg over his last 12 games ( 7 starts) with 2 runs and 1 rbi
Swisher is 2 for his last 16, 125 avg over his last 4 games, with 3 runs and 3 rbis though
Jeter is 6 for his last 27, 222 avg over his last 6 games, with 4 runs and 2 rbi
That is 7 main players all slumping at the same time. They may get one big game where they all come alive for a day, but I can not predict this problem will not be on-going
The Yankees have 1174 hits in 131 team games = 8.96 hits per game.
Seasons 1990 – 2011- here are the Yankees hits per game in order of season:
8.16,,,8.75,,,9.02,,,9.68,,,9.87,,,9.41,,,10.01***,,,10.10,,,10.03***,,,9.68***,,,9.51***,,, 9.24,,,9.56,,,9.31,,,9.15,,,,9.58,,,9.93,,,10.22,,,9.33,,,9.90***,,,9.17,,,8.96
***= denotes world series championship years
(note 1977 = 9.73 hits per game and 1978 = 9.13 hits per game)
If you take the lowest hits per game total for a championship year 1991-2011, the year 2000 at 9.51 hits and.the Yankees this season pacing at 8.96 , a difference of 0.55 hits per game, the difference equates to 89 less hits over the season.
Those 89 hits, spread out , maybe 3 extra hits in a game once every 3-5 games or so, as needed, could turn losses into wins,
Where are we missing the extra 89 hits from? I think we can start at catcher for maybe 30 of those hits, then didvide it up between Swisher, Granderson, Teixeira, and the bench for the rest.
The Yankees are on pace for their worst season in hits per game since 1991.
This may be due to great pitching in baseball today, as Ken Singleton alluded to just last night by giving the Orioles pitcher credit.
We can also see this in the probability there may be only 3-4 guys in all of MLB to reach 200 hits this season.
This makes what Jeter is doing even more great, as he will be one of those 3 or 4 players in all of MLB with 200 hits this season.
that’s my morning update
