Morning Bits: Teixeira, Granderson, Sabathia
Good morning everyone. A HORRIBLE call last night by Jerry Meals cost the Yankees the game–and Mark Teixeira re-injured himself and ranted to reporters about the umpires. Yikes! Yankees can get revenge today at 1:35pm which could determine if the Yankees are in first place. Hopefully this fires this team up. Here are the morning links.
– Mark Teixeira ripped the umpires for their bad call last night and has appeared to re-injure his calf. He’s most definitely not in the lineup today.
– We’re so used to hearing “The Grandy Man Can” but as of late…”The Grandy Man Can’t” even get on base or get clutch hits!
– CC Sabathia has not been what the Yankees had hoped for this season which has really hurt the Yankees. Hey, Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes can’t carry this team by themselves. They need CC!

Where Jeter sits the morning of September 9, 2012 tied for first place with 23 regular season games left to play
Jeter is on pace for 220 hits, 101 runs, and his 323 avg is only 6 points behind Trout for the AL batting title.
220 hits in a season would be the most he ever had ( 219 in 1999)
Jeters played in 137 of 139 games. 57 multi hit games, 53 one hit games, and 27 hitless games.
The Yankees are 37-20 in Jeters multi hit games, 17 games above 500,…. the Yankees overall are also 17 games above 500
Of the 27 hitless games , Jeter reached on a walk, hit by pitch , or error, in 14 of those those games.
Jeter was standing on base at least once in 124 of 137 games by reaching without an out be recorded.
Jeter is currently:
1) 3rd in the AL in qualifing batting average (6 points off lead)
2) 6th in runs scored with 87, but only 6 out 2nd place
3) 1st in on the road avg at 359 among AL players with at least 100 road at bats
4) 1st in average vs leftys at 378 among AL players with at least 100 at bats vs lefty
5) 1st among qualifying AL shortstops in hits, runs, avg, OBP, SLG, and OPS
6) 1st in AL in hits as leadoff hitter (1 hole)
7) 420 average as a DH in 17 games (29 for 69)
8) 389 avg as first batter in first inning (49 for 126)
9) 400 avg on a full count ( 28 for 70, with 19 walks)
10) 308 avg RISP
11) 320 avg 2 outs RISP
12) 39 infield hits
13) 1st plate appearances
14) 1st in at bats
15) 4th in official times on base
16) 350 avg since July 1st on (92 for 263) with 16 doubles, 7 homers, 46 runs
17) 1st in total hits (15 more hits than the 2nd place guy in the AL)
If Jeter finishes strong and wins the AL batting title, leads the majors in hits, with the splits above, I do not see how he would not be considered for the MVP.
Jeters hits by month for each month 1996 season through 2012 season
(march/april and sept/oct are counted as same) –
102 months 6 x 17
Jeter has had a 35+ hit month at least once every season—– and 40 times overall, 20 of those in August and September

Since coming off the DL on July 4th 2011, with 80 team games left in the season, sitting at 2994 career hits Jeter has done the following:
Played in 206 of 219 games
283 hits, 325 average, 44 doubles, 3 tripples, 18 homers, 132 runs, 88 rbi
283 hits in 206 games played = 1.37379 hits per game played
Who in the majors right now has a 325 or better average over their last 206 games they appeared in?
I wonder.
how far bhind willie mays
6 hit to tie mays,… mays had 3283 hits in 22 seasons of play,.. jeter passing that 5 seasons ahead of mays.. Jeter should also get Mays in runs (2062)
ps- mays had only 1-200 hit season ( someof May’s seasons were 154 game seasons).
Jim2244…Good stats as usual!
Jeter had 72 more AB per year as a lead-off hitter, most of the time. Mays was a great hitter of the Snider, Mickey, Hank class, which means they had the responsibility of knocking in runners, whereas Jeter was responsible for getting on base. Meaning you are comparing apples and baseballs.
It is great to see a Yankee move up any record list whatever it be, HR’s, Hits, RBI’s, SO’s or walks.
Jeter has his hit in less PA-10454 to Mays 10881.
Mays was the “Say Hay Kid”, He could run faster than Jeter, throw like Jeter, hit many more HRs than Jeter…does that make one better than the other, No, their jobs were different as was the millenium.
Jim-
Mays was a great all-around player, not just a 3000 hit guy. He could run as fast as Jeter, throw like Jeter, hit HRs like Jeter…….the Say Hey kid.
Another thing they have in common is the Basket Catch.
Yeah, i know, mays had 660 homers 1903 rbis,….. jeters got him in stolen bases though.
348 to 338, lol.
I just will sit on this one stat til someone else does it
Jeter is the first and only player to reach these 5 marks – 3000 hits, 1700 rubs, 1200 rbi, 240 homers, 340 stolen bases
Jim -Did Mickey Mantle reach those milestones?
wwhich word dont you understand –” first and only”
Wow…that’s a great stat …..neither Mays nor Mickey accomplished those milestones….you are correct. When you dig into the detail like you do, you can see how great Jeter really is.
right, i got a lot of time on my hands, to think up ways to express jeter’s greatness in numbers
I wonder if Mays and Mantle won more gold gloves than Jeter?
Jim – I looked it up
Mays -12 golden gloves
Jeter – 5 golden gloves
Mantle – 1 golden glove
The only player to EVER WIN the Major League Triple Crown….Mickey Mantle.
I am not sure but, being the only one to ever do that, must put him in the same class as the greatest of the greats. That year, very few of the fans even knew he was going after something like the Triple Crown…until the end!
Gold Gloves were given to players that were very very good in his day. Guys like Al Kaline, Curt Flood, Jim Landis they were really good OF.
Ken….sorry but the Mick was not the only player to win the major league triple crown.
• Five of the winners — Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Hornsby (in 1925), Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams (in 1942) — led both leagues in all three categories, effectively winning a major league Triple Crown.
Mantle would have won more gold gloves if he wasn’t hungover. They played many day games in the sun and he had bad headaches.
n, I was reminded of Bouton’s story about the time Mantle hit a homerun hung over. When he returned to the dugout, Bouton asked his bleary-eyed teammate how he could see the ball.
“I saw three balls,” Mantle would say, “and I hit the one in the middle.”
With the crowd still cheering, Mantle added, “Those people don’t know how hard that really was.”
3-Crown winners of the Major Leagues was a mis-print on my part, I think 5 are right.
Being one of five of the greatest players still isn’t to bad for an alcoholic! With his drinking and injuries, still one of the greats…such a waste of talent, but still one of my all time favorite players.
Yes, Ken, Mickey wasted so much talent. All those little boys looking up to him, while he was hunched over the urinal, throwing up Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Jeter doesn’t drink or do drugs , which has allowed him to have such a lengthy and productive career , even to the age of 38.
Integrity…..Character…….#2
The complete story of Mickey’s Drunk HR is;
Casey told Mick he would sit out the game that day so, he went out and got drunk. The day of said game, he was hung over and had slippers (or basketball shoes) on, sleeping in the corner of the dug-out. The Yanks were behind (going from my reading of the original story) so Casey sent one of the guys down to wake up Mickey and tell him he was going to hit, he did hit the homer and said (passing by the catcher); “Those people don’t know how hard that really was.” or something like that!
I never read the Bouton book so, he may have written as was quoted above, but I did read the original story in a book by Mel Allen.
Mel Allen? I read that book too. Coincidence?
I find it rather amazing how Yankee fans try to put down other ball players to make his player look better. No need at all, you are comparing apples and oranges and different generations.
I was the one that recommended Mel Allen’s book for reading by fans!
Also, as far as I can recall, that was the only time Mickey showed up for a game drunk and hung over. He always believed he was going to die as his uncles and dad had…very erly in life. They had (as had Mickey) worked in the coal mines, and died around 35. Mickey thought…because of the mines…he also was going out at 35 or so.
Jim …good stats on MVP Jeter…..Cabrera is having a once in a lifetime triple crown year, trout has been huge for LA……..but JETER MUST NOT BE IGNORED ™.
