Romero has a 5.87 ERA. The Yankees need to jump on him early and get some big runs in this game.
Stats at this point don’t mean much, each game is an entity in itself!
Doug – congratulations on not using the trademarked RANDOM ™.
Curious why stats don’t count now? At this point? Please elaborate..
Well first of all Andy Pettite hadn’t pitched in a month, second half of the Jays and Yanks are injured, third the Yanks are playing a day night double header after two days off which doesn’t happen too often.
Doug – are you saying throw out stats for most games because there are different variables that will effect the game (like injuries, timing etc) which makes them unpredictable? RANDOM(tm)
twasp, I’ll save that Random for the playoffs. Players like Nix, McGehee, Stewart, Phelps, for Yanks and Gomes, Gose, and Hekaverria are not your household names. Romero went from a #1 pitcher to a #5, call it what you want, he is capable of pitching a good game. How can the Yanks go 0-56 when trailing in a game late?
When trailing a game late you need basehits. The Yankees are only 7th in the Al in batting average, with Cano and Jeter REALLY skewing that stat as a two man band. Its simple really, we have two guys who hit consistently and everyone else doesn’t!!
Yanks are third in runs and the O’s are 9th, that’s the bottom line.
Why 0-56? No reward with a pie anymore. Bring back AJ says Mike P.
The O’s have that magic this year, with a negitive differential.
Do you think this Orioles season is a fluke? I mean they have a negative differential but yet their fighting for the AL East?
Jeter back at SS is good to see. Although I hope Girardi doesn’t make a habit out of benching Nunez. I LOVE that he sat Andruw Jones vs a LHP. It’s not his birth-right to play against every LHP. The guy has sucked big time and has horrible #s vs Romero.
It’s really amazing how bad Ricky Romero has been this year. Last season he was one of the top LHPs in MLB, finishing 15-11 with a 2.92 ERA & 1.13 WHIP. This year his ERA has DOUBLED to 5.87 and his WHIP is 1.62. Left-Handed Hitters have crushed him to a .881 OPS this yr.
Romero has not won a decision since June 22nd. He’s made 14 starts since then and has gone 0-13 with a 7.91 ERA – a .325 BA against and .904 OPS against. The Yanks have to bang him around early and get a nice lead. For once it would be nice to win big without having to use everyone in the bullpen.
Girardi no doubt went to his binder and found the following stats vs Romero:
Ichiro is 9 for 25 (.360)
Nix is 7 for 12 (.583)
A.Jones is 4 for 26 (.154)
Good for Jeter getting 200 hits!!!
Matt – the Great Jeter 200 hits as a 38 YEAR OLD SHORTSTOP! Unheard of!
I know you said shortstop but to note. Paul Molitor and Sam Rice both got 200 hits at 40 years old.
Don’t tell me that.
If Molitor can hit .341 with 225 hits at 39/40? Why can’t Jeter?
Molitor was a full-time DH if memory serves me correctly.
yes he was. again wasn’t saying he was a SS was just saying that two guys have done it in there 40′s. Molitor was one of the first True DH’s to be elected in the Hall on a first ballot.
Jeter is also leading the Majors in Plate Appearances which is quite impressive also. That a 38 yr old SS can play that much is very unusual. I actually think it’s a poor job by Girardi. Should have gotten Jeter some more rest during the year.
Matt s. – was Molitor a first ballot Hall of Famer?
yes he was.
And remember Molitor was not a shortstop when he got over 200 hits at 39…..he was a designated hitter. In fact Molitor only played 57 games at SS his whole career…last time at age 25.
Just makes Jeter look more fantastic.
none of those players I mentioned were considered shortstops. was just mentioning they both got 200 hits at age 40.
Good evening…YFU. I embrace the opportunity to join you again. Thank you.
This may a bit unusual, but this is how I was raised. Allow me, please…
I wish to thank the management, of YFU.
I wish to thank my friend, the poster that has no equal…on this planet. Thank you all.
I hope to do a good job, and contribute in my own way. Take care.
Welcome Patrick!!!
welcome.
Yeah…it’s so amazing that Jeter is nimble enough at 38 to play SS and also get to 200 hits. I can see an outfielder or DH doing it but a SS? Jeter is a first ballot HOF.
agreed!
Welcome Patrick.
Granderson is Dave Kingman
Mike money P.
Good analogy to kingman. Strikeout or home run. Grandy wasnt always like that. 2007, 2008, 2011 he’s been over .360 OBP.
Phelps is pitching a real good one. It would be a shame to waste this effort. I wish we could get someone across the plate.
How many Left On Base is that now for Jeter in this game?
will answer my own question 4 for Jeter and 5 for A-rod.
and now an error, damnit
Matt – be kind to two future first ballot HOF ers. Someone does need to help Phelps out…he’s pitching great.
Ha ha …maybe second ballot HOFer…..
nice steal from Grandy!!!
Anybody still crying that we got rid of Wise for Ichiro?
Ichiro is smelling playoffs!!!!
Ichiro was only in the playoffs in 2001 that must feel like forever for him.
Ichiro another good move by Cashman picking him up! 7-8 today.
CashMan apologist.
It was actually more of an ownership move. Remember Seattle’s owner called Hal or Levine or somebody and said Ichiro wanted to play for a contender and they talked money. Levine then called Cashman and said if we can work out the money would you want Ichiro? Cash said yes and the move was made. It was ownership that approved the additional cash, just like they approved the extra cash for Pettitte after Cashman already set the roster and payroll.
Ichiro is awesome!!! Nick Swisher…who?
UGH Swish. He is in playoff form.
Since when did we get 2 carbon copy Brett Gardner’s aside from the original??
scoreboard watch Oakland about to lose and Tampa about to win. Let’s go Mariners and King Felix tonight.
I wonder if Girardi will remember this. He played the lefty Ichiro instead of the righty Andruw Jones vs a LHP and look what happened. 7 hits and 4 SBs in the DH….wow! He also had a great catch in Game 1 that saved the tying run in the 8th. He seemed to find a fountain of youth during the 2 days off. Amazing what some rest can do for an old body!
Yanks looked helpless against Romero’s changeup. Here’s a pitcher who is 0-13 with a 7.91 ERA in his last 14 starts making Cano, ARod and the everyone look helpless. But clutch hits by Stewart and Ichiro.
We had some bad luck in the 2nd inning. I was shocked that Nix got thrown out at the plate on Ichiro’s single to center….. I thought he’d score standing up. And the next batter Chris Stewart hit what should have been a 2-run double but it bounced in the stands for a ground-rule 2B and only 1 run scored.
Well, Yankees (mostly Ichiro) did what they had to do. Sweep the double header! King Felix…good luck up there in Seattle.
Yanks swept the DH WITHOUT A HOME RUN! They did it with great pitching, good fundamental baseball, moving runners & stealing bases. They did not hit well as a team but I like that they were able to pull out 2 wins when the bats weren’t hitting. They need to be able to create runs in a variety of ways. But if we are going to go far this year they need production from the middle of the order, namely Cano & ARod but Grandy & Swish also.
