Morning Bits: Ibanez!!!!!!, Jeter, A-Rod & more…
What a finish last night. What can’t be overlooked is how well Kuroda pitched though. Girardi did have some balls for sitting A-Rod in the 9th and going to Ibanez so for as much as well kill his moves this was a correct one as it paid off. Yankees vs O’s back at it tonight as Hughes could clinch the series tonight. It would be great as the Yankees could use the off day on Friday.
Let’s get to some links…
– Marchand notes that Hughes has handled these O’s.
– Ian Begley has some tidbits from the clubhouse.
– ESPN Stats takes a look at how Ibanez has the knack for the dramatic.
– Anthony McCarron reports on the story that Jeter will play tonight.
– Matthew Leach suggests it’s time, not calendar in what is hurting A-Rod.

Seth Smith had himself a great game last night. I know Fish is a big fan of his. Good to see Oakland force a game 5 with the Tigers making Verlander have to pitch again.
enough pitching……check
enough homers…….check
enough Raul………..Hell Yeah!!!!
Go Yankees
Matt, how quickly things change in the playoffs, Oakland is tough at home, and the Tigers having to pitch Verlander is a big plus for the Yanks if they can win tonight. That would keep CC in line for the first game in the ALC. This year we have had alot of drama down the stretch.
At some point the three postseason zombies have to wake up or the ALCS is as far as we go. I just can’t take watching ARod, Swish, and Tex
Wow, have I had enough of ARod taking all the heat for some tragic postseason players who should be taking equal amounts. This is as bad as what was done to Burnett and it’s total BS.
Arod is at an age where his prime should not be expected and at least he carried the Yankees on his back in one postseason to a title.
Now, lets take a look at Mark Teixeira, making 23.5 million dollars a year. A career .301 hitter when he was handed an 8 year, 23.5 million dollars a year deal, here are some “fun facts” about Teixeira.
1) As a Yankee in the postseason, Teixeira is now 22-118(.186) with only THREE home runs!!! Or one more home run than Raul Ibanez has in 5 postseason at bats as a Yankee.
2) Including his postseason at bats, Teixeira is batting .247 since the 2009 postseason.
3) Teixeira has done this at ages 29-32, which should have been his prime years.
Swisher? Don’t even get me started on his postseason performance as a Yankee, it’s just as bad as Teixeira’s.
The ARod scapegoating is way over the top and extremely unfair, considering the other two postseason zombies are even more sickening.
Mike u missed the biggest Zombie of them all Granderson, heard he ‘s making a guest apperance on The Walking Dead
He’s about to be officially named the 4th postseason zombie. They’ll be a ceremony in a week,
To late Michael p…
I have on the list for the 1st day of the play-offs.
I think I had Swisher, Tex, A-Rod and Granderson as the 4 Horsemen of the Inept.
That ain’t bad…Zombies or “The 4 Horsemen of the inept”
Also, I agree with you…A-Rod gets all the pressure put on him, not that he can’t handle it, it’s just, everyone acts as though he was the only one that struck out the other day in the 9th inning…not so!
Oh well, I say; “Let there be a Yankee win tonight”! lol
Michael, you must realize by now that players are paid on past performance, since no GM is a mind reader or can look into the future.
But their is a huge fight brewing…the owners will not back off of a year limit on contracts going forward. Their is too much money going to non deserving players. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a strike on the horizon.
Let it out about Swisher now cause he won’t be a Yankee next year.
Good, and I pray we pick up Granderson’s option and trade him for a case of Gatorade and two cases of sunflower seeds. Probably the saddest thing about the Yankees future is that Teixeira has a full no trade clause and loves NY. We can’t even dump his sorry ass and eat most of the money. ARod at some point will agree to be traded to someplace like Miami and we’ll eat a few years of his deal. Teixeira is here for FOUR more years!! Can you imagine what his average and OBP will be in a few years? Gives me chills to think about it. It’s terrifying.
Mike there’s still alot of oppourtunites for guys to re- write this years playoffs.
Arod could come up big tonight vs Saunders,Curtis has hit more hrs than anyone in baseball over the last 2 seasons thats pretty special.
Who would of thought Raul would pull a Matsui ,not many of us!!!!
Tex aids in wins with his D.
The most useless player of your Zombies is Swisher, guy does nothing, can’t hit a good pitcher horrible in the field and the worst baserunner on the team,oh and he acts like a moron,I didn’t want him on the team this year ,i told Fish Beltran was the play.
I’m with you BP. I didnt like Swish since day one. His act now is tiresome. I really hope to see him on another team next year.
He is gone for sure.If the Boss was still alive and running things Swish would have been gone 2 years ago.The guys a clown and a bad example of Yankee tradition.
exactly my point about the Yankee Tradition.
They can’t keep him for 14 so he’s either here on a 1 year deal next year or gone for good.
Offensively, if Tex keeps turning in low AVG and OBPs over the next 4 years, it certainly will be unsettling. However, I personally think the remaining tenure of his contract is made somewhat bearable by the elite defense he provides.
It’s Granderson’s HR or out approach that really drives me crazy. Here’s a startling stat: 35% of his plate appereances this year resulted in either a HR or a K. 31% of his hits were HRs.

I think Ballpark makes a great point regarding “there’s still a lot of oppourtunites for guys to re- write this years playoffs.”
Thanks Mike lets hope so
So far Teixeira’s three postseason home runs have cost 31.3 million apiece!!!
Raul’s two postseason home runs have cost 500 grand apiece, a true bargain!!
Yanks matchup real well vs Saunders,as a team they hit him for 303/883 ba/ops.
Ballpark lineup tonight;#s = BA/OPS VS Saunders
DH- Jete 500/1249,rest the foot no ss
Rf -Ichiro 341/811
3B-AROD 438/1382 Saunders is perfect to get Arod going mid 80 southpaw
2B Cano 214/500 hasn’t hit Saunders but he’s Cano enough said
LF RAUL 348/1027 HE SHOULD NEVER COME OUT OF THE LINEUP AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C Martin 333/1121 owns lhp’s
1B Tex 167/508 can’t hit but his D always plays big in the post
CF Granderson 250/771 he’s lost at the plate maybe he runs inti a bomb?
ss Nix 300/1500 the gritty little guy has 3 hr’s in 10 ab’s vs Saunders and does anyone really want Nunez fielding a routine gb in a tight spot answer of course not.
Side note; Swisher should sit 208/ 655 the guy might be the worst post season performer in Modern Yankee history the guy is useless and If
they play him over Raul the Yanks deserve to loose
What would you guys do tonight?
ballpark… good line-up!
One change and that is all, Brett in CF and batting 9th. A-Rod is bad? Granderson is one of the worse players this year. He has about 1/2 the chance of Hitting a HR as A-Rod does. At the lest, A-Rod may get a walk or a single. Grandy….zip, nada, nothing!
What say you, would you sit Grandy for Brett?
Good morning Ken,
I agree with you on Granderson, just don’t know if Gardy can swing it.
I would get Gardy in to run and then take over for Raul as a late game defensive replacement.
Good day to you ballpark, I hope this day finds you in good health!
I think Brett has big numbers against leftys this year, somewhere around .600 BA for this year. Not a very large sample but he isn’t an automatic out as is Grandy…3 and done all day yesterday.
Well, my liking Brett and knowing he can do a better job in CF, on the bases and hitting without much power could be one of the reasons I am pushing for him…I hope not!
Question for all you guys;
what would be the tougher conversation?
Telling Raul he’s not playing tonight or Swisher?
ballpark, I would sit Swisher he’s been bad in the playoffs and won’t be back next year. Raul plays over Swisher the rest of the way.
agreed!!!!!!
My opinion of Girardi will go up or down based on his lineup tonight.
Hey Doug how are you doing,
As a manager u know stats from april and may mean nothing its about who is seeing the ball big today.
Post season runs are hard to come by,and without identifying a teams hot bats ,impossible!!!
The playoffs is about using your eyes and current scouting reports to manage a team to victory in tournament baseball,You can throw the stats out till next year! You use the word random and i do agree to a certain extent.Stats become totally random in a short series how ever the team with the best advanced scouts who lay out the best game plan take away the randomness.ItS THE PART OF THE GAME THAT GETS THE LEAST ATTENTION.Its also the reason pitchers dominte in the playoffs, their going off detailed CURRENT reports on what a hitter is doing right now.During the regular season reports aren’t as detailed or current.
Shortdo become random, just look at last nights game for the O’s. What are odds of Flaherty and Machado hitting homeruns. What are odds that Johnson blows both games for the O;s. Lastly what are the odds that Girardi hits for A-Rod , who has never been hit for, and Ibanez hits the game tying and winning homers. The advanced scouts don;t seem to be helping Weiters, Hardy, and Jones, nor Chavez, Grandy, A-Rod, Swisher, Ichiro, or Cano. Add to that the umpires and the cooler weather and things just become more unpredictable. Remember also their is a fine line between teams in the playoffs. Baseball is a game of mistakes, the teams that make the least usually win, but not always.
Putting Raul behind Cano will also help Robbie get going. He saw nothing but balls last night.
Buck will have to respect Raul he is the hottest bat in the postseason!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Doug this ones for u.
Would u have taken Gonzales out after 7 last night ,I have my opinion curious on what another manager saw?
ballpark, I had to do a double take when they pulled him, my first instinct was that Buck let the Yanks off the hook. Managers are creatures of habit and routine. With a slim lead Buck felt he could go to his pen as he had done all season. Buck will tell you he has all the confidence in the world in Johnson, but at this point he has no choice but to go with them. It amazes me that a pitcher like Gonzales can pitch that well with his track record.
I agree with your assesment why Buck did what he did,but when a guy is throwing a complete GEM alla Cliff Lee in the playoffs u have to ride him to the win.Buck gave us that game ,no way we hit that kid that night. He was almost perfect Yanks didn’t square a ball up all night and he was getting stronger as the innings went on.
Also take a look at these numbers:
Career vs. Joe Saunders
Ibanez: .348 AVG / .375 OBP / .652 SLG / 2 HR / 6 RBI in 23 AB
Swisher: .208 AVG / .321 OBP / .333 SLG / 1 HR / 6 RBI in 24 AB
Ibanez please.
Mike if Girardi plays Swisher over Ibanez he is clueless.
nice stats Mike.
Raul, any doubt? Swisher and Grandy could set, without hurting the team.
This is funny BALLPARK. We haven’t spoken in a while yet we have almost the exact same outlook on tonight’s game. Last night after the game I wrote the article that was posted at Noon today and the first thing I noticed was their great #s off Saunders.
Nix playing SS today with Jeter DHin is the right move. I would have kept ARod in the 3 hole tonight as he crushes LHP and Saunders doesn’t have the Fastball to jam him like anyone who throws 90+ can do right now. I also don’t want Posada – I mean Tex – running the bases when Cano rips a Double or 2 tonight. Ibanez has great #s off Saunders and with last night’s heroics HAS to play. I don’t understand why Girardi can’t take a guy out for a game. Every other team does it in the playoffs if they have a hot-hitter available on the bench. Does anyone believe that Buck, Leyland, Melvin, etc. would keep Ibanez on the bench today????
That is why JOE must GO! He’s a dipstick.
Saunders was 0-6 agains;t the Rangers lifetime and he beat them. How recent are these numbers agains’t Saunders.
Fish your right ,Girardi is a hypocritical thinking manager and he makes no sense
Good morning, Urban Bloggers!….and to our cosmopolitan bloggers also. I slept right through it! Are not replays great?….Terrific win. And the brightest star of all?..Manager Joseph A.Girardi! …Brilliant move putting Ibanez in. Genius, the stuff legends are made of. The Orioles never saw it coming. I must check, how many men left on base………………………….where’s Tommy Twasp?
Fill this in. I can live with Hughes pitching ________ innings and giving up ______ earned runs tonight.
I can live with Hughes pitching __9__ innings and giving up __0__ earned runs.
Kidding….Realistically, I can like with Hughes pitching 6 innings, but he needs to give up as few runs as possible (like 1-2, 3 at the max) – I don’t particularly trust the offense very much.
you got to figure the bats will come alive at some point though right?
Well hopefully – they’ll need to if the Yanks want to get #28.
I can live with Hughes pitching ___6___ innings and giving up ___0___ earned runs tonight.
Hughes 3 earned runs on 2 home runs going 3 innings with Phelps coming in for 4 shutout innings. Yankees win 5 to 4 in 16 innings with Ibanez finally getting into the game for the winning home run. Buck cries….
Just read that Girardi’s father passed away today but he will still be with the team to manage tonight’s game.
That’s too bad for Joe. Sorry to hear that.
