Alex Rodriguez needs surgery on hip–again

Day one of the Winter Meetings started off with a bang when the Yankees revealed that Alex Rodriguez had been playing with a tear in his hip last season and might now need more surgery. Rodriguez could miss the beginning of the 2013 season which leaves uncertainty for the Yankees. Entering the Winter Meetings, the Yankees needed to replace a right fielder and a catcher after it’s almost certain that Nick Swisher won’t return for the ’13 season (and Martin signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates last week). Now the Yankees have to focus on finding an infielder since by the time the regular season begins both A-Rod and Derek Jeter will be coming back from major surgeries. Jeter needed surgery on his ankle last season after fracturing it during Game 1 of the ALCS.

Rodriguez will have surgery in Colorado in January by Dr. Marc Philippon who did the surgery on Rodriguez in 2009.

  1. A-Rods injury is not a secret from me, I talked about his be a man (Ok, he did drugs back in the day) and never using an injury for a get out of jail free card as some players do. I don’t care for Jeter or A-Rod but, I do care about their talent.

Love him (not many do) or hate him (now you’re talking, most do) he mans up and is a real stand-up guy. Unlike some players that make sure the media lets everyone know he has a bad ankle, hammy or toe and will play through it. No one had any idea A-Rod was injured again, now we know where his power went. I and a few others said his hand was still hurting him and hinted he could still be having trouble with his hip…but to say I had guessed his hip was bad again would be a lie but, we did wonder a bit.

I keep comparing Jeter and A-Rod because they are about as far apart in Style as they are in personality. Of the two players, I would take A-Rod over Jeter at the start of their careers in a heart beat. If I wanted a great personality and a player to be the face of the team…it would be Jeter!

In reality, one can’t camparie the two players because, other than playing SS, they are completely different players!

    • arod disrespected the game of baseball,.. BASEBALL,.. an american tradition, like mom’s home made apple pie,…… a game that been around since at least the early 1870′s,…..

i dont see how any fan of baseball can lolok at him with anything other that complete and utter distain and distrust

  2. Very sad for Arod. Pains me that the Yankees didn’t say anything in the playoffs when the guy was in so much pain after one of the DS games that he had to spend the night in the hospital. Arod just took the beating he took without saying anything publicly. However, if this makes the Yankees be more aggressive it’s not the worst thing.

  3. the yankees shoulda traded him for reyes when they had the chance,… now its just like i said,…..

arods gonna mioss 90 games this season,…… probably the first 84 games to the all star break,.. then days off after he comes back too.

with maybe obnly 72 games to play,.. arod chance of getting the 99 hits to reach 3000 are zero

getting 13 homers to reach 660 wont happen either,.. this is bad for the yankees,,. because arod making 28 million, and bonmus to 30 for reaching 660, is less of a hit than in 2014,, making 25 million, then getting a bvonus to 30 for reaching 660

knowing aroids gr4eed and personality,… he will probably hit 12 homers ,.. then try not to hit a homer, to get the extra 3 million differencve next season

    • furthermore,, arod has 1898 runs, jeter has 1868,…..

back during the seasin i posed the question, who would reach 2000 runs first?,.. and people on here said clearly it wouyld be arod

i kept saying no way,… jeter was going to get to 2000 runs scored before arod , before this new mysterious injury to his hip,…..

      now it is a guarntee

wht didnt arod speak up the day after the playoffs?,….. and get the surgery in october? he woulda missed maybe only paqrt of april,…

instead he doesnt say anything til december 3rd?

      AROD CAN NOT BE TRUSTED

      I HATE HIM, LOL

  4. IF THE YANKEES CAN LINK HGH USE,, STEROIDS, — BEING DIRECTLY INJECTED INTO ARODS HIP,…… TO THE INJURIES NOW ON BOTH HIPS,..

THEY MAY BE ABLE TO SUE THEIR WAY OUT OF THIS CONTRACT.

AROD IS KNOWN TO BE A LIAR,……. YOU FILE IN NY STATE COURT,…. IN THE BRONX DISTRICT,….

LAW SUITS ARE ABOIUT QUESTIONS, AND GETTING QUESTIONS ANSWERED

JURY WILL KNOW AND BELIEVE AROD IS A LIAR,.. CAUSE HE DENIED USING HGH FOR YEARS,.. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS USING IT,…… BLASTING 45-55 HOME RUN SEASONS,…

THE LAW SUIT WOULD BE SETTLED BY ARODS PEOPLE,…. THE YANKEES CAN GET OUT OF THE CONTRACT

    I GUARANTEE IT

    THEY JUST GOT TO TRY

  5. HOW CAN SO MANY YANKEES FANS AND BASEBAL FANS,.. NOT BE OUTRAGED, TO THE POINT OF BEING SO UPSET,,. THE SHOULD PROTEST AGAINST AROD

  6. arod hid this injury from the day after the last playoff games til december 3rd, and now he cant get a surgeon until january,….. and will probably miss at least 80 games next season,…

    to me thats a fraud

    AFRAUD STRIKES AGAIN

    • Maybe Jim is onto something here…… If the hip injury is a result of shooting boli in his hips for years…..then shouldn’t we be angry with Arod? Did he misrepresent himself when he got that huge contract?

  7. Sup guys.

Too bad for A-Rod. Whether you like him or not, the fact that he didn’t say anything publicly about his hip during the playoffs, instead of making (valid) excuses says a lot.

Jim – If A-Rod had to go to the hospital during the division series, then the management undoubtedly knew about it — and that’s why he didn’t play. So, thanks, but no reason to protest aganist A-Rod.

Rangers just signed Joakim Soria to a 2 yr deal, who had said before he was very interested in pitching for the Yankees. I think they need to add an arm to the ‘pen who can close, as insurance for Rivera. Does anybody know what the latest timetable is for David Aardsma?

Also read that the Yankees are interested in RH OF Scott Hairston. Doubt they will give him a 2 year deal though because of 2014. The Tigers just offered him 2 years, but supposedly he “will not be a Tiger” according to Adam Rubin. There are a bunch of other teams interested in Hairston, so if the Yankees aren’t willing to give 2 years, seems fairly unlikely they will sign him to me.

Troy Renck said the Yankees showed some interest in 3B/2B Chris Nelson (Rockies) last year, so that interest might be renewed now. Put up some pretty solid numbers last year, so that could be an option.

I think that some benefit could be made of the A-Rod injury. (1) Some one of the minors players could finally be given a shot. (2) They could bring in a guy like Headley (though don’t want the farm system to get too depleted). (3) If whoever replaces him early in the season has success, it could mean a move to DH for A-Rod, which would probably maximize his offensive production.

    • I believe Aardsma should be able to pitch during Spring Training. He pitched at the end of last season.

    • This should be a lesson learned for the old Yankee fans that think character has nothing to do with winning.

Arod breaking down like all the juicers did ….effected his game…..made him a loser beingbdropped in the lineup.

Cheaters have no character……and we are paying the price….I believe in the preachings of Jim1234.

    • Mike D….
You have one way of looking at the A-Rod injury, I will not even imply your thinking is flawed in any way at all.
Reading your idea and those above I have come up with an idea of my own. Yes, my thinking is very misunderstood but, it is an obtuse angle of thinking none the less.

I think it was a combination of things and people who kept the injury under wraps:
1–A-Rod has never used anything as a alibi, and wasn’t going to use this latest thing with the hip be a 1st!
2–I realize it is a joke with some fans but, as I have said before and will again, if Joba can be convinced to throw his Slider down the middle and let it break off he would get more SO (personally, I would never throw a slider at all, the Change-up is a better pitch. Sliders that don’t slide go a long way. He can do the job as closer with help from Mo.
3–A-Rod as a full time DH is a good idea but, with a few draw backs, what about Jeter, Tex and Gardner to name just a few that will need DH time.
4–For A-Rods 3rd base position we have one or two guys that may be good enough for that job.
My #5—Cash and the front office may have kept quit along with Joe G and the coaches. That opened the door for Cashman to seek out a very good 3rd basemen without being heald up for a trade.

      • I don’t think Gardner will even see DH time. He’s never DH’d in his life and the Yankees love his glove. They’ll leave him out in LF/CF as if he’s a robot. He’d have to collapse first before the Yankees give him a half day off.

        • Delia …beat thebguys to the punch…do you remberbabfewbseasons back ..what Yankee 3 base man had the highest vertical leap?

        • Delia E….
You may well be right but, I was really shining the light on the DH spot because of fans saying; “move A-Rod to DH”.
Besides young lady, I think this is the year they move Brett back to CF…of course, only if they have half a mind to think with!
What about it? Brett in CF this coming year? lol :)

  8. The ARod news doesn’t really surprise me. I’ve been saying for a couple of years that he has no flexibility in his hips to get to pitches on the inner half anymore. He can’t turn on those pitches which is why pitchers constantly bust him inside. The other thing he lost is his lower body strength to drive the ball out to Center and RCF. He used to routinely drop the bat head out on pitches away from him and hit them 400+ feet with seemingly little effort.

So maybe this surgery will do him some good. He was stronger in 2009 after his first surgery. But the thing that has me puzzled is he supposedly complained of pain in his right hip after Game 1 of the ALCS. They did an MRI which found no problems. Now, they do an MRI on the left hip and show the labrum tear. What about the original problem with the right hip he had issues with in the playoffs?

Yanks need to move on and find another 3B. They cannot count on ARod anymore. He’s 37 and has had significant health issues the last 4-5 years. Best case scenario is they come to an injury settlement and he retires but that won’t happen. If he comes back healthy you DH him and let him play some 3B and 1B but they need to find a legit 3B for now and the future. Chavez was productive last yr but he’s another old player with chronic, reocurring injuries. The Chase Headley trade isn’t an option. He was one of the best players in the N.L. last yr and the price tag would be huge now. A year or 2 ago was the time to pounce on him.

Since the team refuses to spend a nickel on their 2014 budget, I’d go with Adams and sign someone from the Keppinger, Ian Stewart,, Stephen Drew group.

  9. Mike D.

Yes, Arod deserves some kudos for not mentioning his hip when he was going bad. But before everyone starts getting gooey eyed about what a “man” he is , let’s not forget what he was doing to his wife and kids, behind their backs, and this:

Jeter is twice the “man” Arod is ….

  10. I’m seeing a lot of stories mentioning Cody Ross as a target and they are starting to make some sense. While I have my sights a bit higher (Gordon, Choo, Wil Myers, etc.) This team definitely needs some RH power. When you consider that they lost Martin and Swisher and their 2 best RH hitters (Jeter & ARod) are coming off substantial injuries, they need a RH bat.

Cody Ross has a career .928 OPS vs LHP including a 1.010 OPS in 2012. He wrecks LHP and would be a good complement to the Yankee lineup filled with LH bats. They could still sign Ichiro or Nate Schierholz to a 1-yr deal along with Ross since they need to fill the DH spot for at least until/if ARod comes back. Question of course is how much $$$? Johnny Gomes got $5M a yr for 2 yrs……I’d think Ross would get more $$ and more yrs. Does that eliminate the Yankees?

    • Ross would be a nice option Fish I agree. Of course I can’t say my confidence is high that they will pony up for him.

  11. Fish …who was the Yankee 3baseman with the highest vertical leap?

  12. Matt B….whats up….see if you can beat the big Fish to the punch….what Yankee 3 b man had the highest vertical leap?

  13. Jim….how do you know he has an illegal hand gun?

  14. Rumor is lots of old republicans have illegal handguns….

  15. Boy, you guys are the worse fans and the most self rightgest fans I have ever had the displeasure to read. I know I could stop reading the garbage, lies, and hear say rhetoric come from you two.

It is amazing, I am called a Jeter hater but, one of you says he hates A-Rod and the other has not said much more than here say, lies and made-up stores about two players, one of which is in the HoF because he has trouble excepting the truth about a player I haven’t denigrated at ever.

Mickey was drunk one time for a game because he was told he had the day off, and never made that mistake again… He was in the race for the Babes 60 Homers record when he came down with a bad cold. One of the players told him about a doctor to get vitamin A shots from just down the street from the park. He knew if he told the mgr. he would be benched so he went to the doctor and got an abscess from a dirty needle.

If one goes out of their way to besmirch a player, do so with facts, not with made up stories or jealous scenarios, or my favorit….he had to be using his whole life. Just because someone has the idea he had been using his whole career…doesn’t make it so.

  16. Ken – the truth is neither one of us knows the “truth”. Arod may have or may have not. Doesn’t really matter …he was a great player, no one in their right mind can deny it. and just look at the numbers, he was obviously a lot better than Jeter. Both offensively and defensively.

Ok ….? You won……..you wore me out…… Keep on truckin’ youngster.

  17. Well, how about that sh-t, I can go out a winner!
Sarcasm fits some people very well but, I choose to ignore it!

  18. Yes, Kenny, you can go out a winner. But don’t go out yet, you still have a thing or two to teach Jim1234. :-)

    • Twasp……..it’s been a long time! Where have you been? Still going after Kenny, I see. You two, should shake hands, and move on…………………When you guys are setting the blog world on fire, no two are better. I mean that…………..and, Kenny, you know I do!

  19. Yeah, Kenny, Patrick is right…..you and I are the best! Like Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, Frick and Frack….

** TWASP reaches out to shake **

  20. KENNY…dam-it! Shake Twasp’s hand, and lets go. You said I was thick, Irish? You are worse. A person is trying to mend fences with you…….and you act like a Cowgirl, with cramps!
