Could the Yankees upgrades already be on the team?
Mariano Rivera – Closer
Mariano Rivera is baseball’s greatest closer and that’s no secret. So when Mariano Rivera went down with an ACL tear last season, fans feared that the Yankees would lose their season due to not having the best closer money can buy. Although Rafael Soriano stepped in and helped the Yankees, he couldn’t make the Yankees forget about Mariano, who is the All-Time Saves leader and besides Derek Jeter is the most respected player in baseball. Now that Mariano is almost 100% ready to return this season, he could be the greatest “upgrade” to the Yankees bullpen. And at least, let Mariano have one last hurrah before flying off into the sunset (along with his good friend Andy Pettitte).
Mark Teixeira – 1B
I know, Mark Teixeira was there the whole season in 2012, but there was something fans didn’t know about Texieira during the season. On an interview with WFAN, Teixeira revealed that he was only healthy for two months of the season! We knew Teixeira had been battling respiratory issues in the beginning of the season, but only feeling healthy for two months is actually surprising since he put up “Yankees Teixeira” numbers. In 2012, Teixeira batted .251/.332/.475. 2011 (when he was healthy) wasn’t a far cry from his ’12 numbers. In 2011, Tex batted .248/.341/.494. The main issue with Teixeira is the fact that he goes into a cold funk in April–every year. Hopefully the World Baseball classic can help him get out of that funk and he’ll have a hot bat by the time the season begins.
