2012: A Year In Review

2012 has been an exciting (yet puzzling) year for the Yankees. They made signings, were plagued with injuries but overall were able to win the AL East and advance to the ALCS (where there season unfortunately ended in a four game sweep). Let’s take a look at the signings, the trades and the unfortunate injuries that occurred in their path to an AL East Championship.

October 31, 2011: The Yankees and CC Sabathia agreed to a contract extension for 5 years and guaranteed $122 Million with a vesting 6th year option.

December 9, 2011: The Yankees signed RHP Freddy Garcia to a one-year contract worth $4 Million.

December 30, 2011: The Yankees signed OF Andruw Jones to a one-year contract worth $2 Million.

January 23, 2012: The Yankees traded C Jesus Montero  and RHP Hector Noesi to the Seattle Mariners for RHP Michael Pineda & RHP Jose Campos.

January 26, 2012: The Yankees signed SP Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year contract worth $10 Million.

February 19, 2012: The Yankees traded SP A.J Burnett to the Pirates for $13 Million cash, minor league pitcher Diego Moreno and minor league outfielder Excardo Ciones.

Feburary 21, 2012: The Yankees signed DH Raul Ibanez to a one-year contract worth $1.1 Million.

February 22, 2012: The Yankees signed LHP David Aardsma to a one-year contract worth $500K with a 2013 club option worth $500K.

February 27, 2012: The Yankees signed 3B Eric Chavez to a one-year contract worth $900k.

March 16, 2012: The Yankees signed SP Andy Pettitte to a one-year minor league contract worth $2.5 Million with an invitation to Spring Training.

March 31, 2012: Michael Pineda diagnosed with a torn labrum on his right shoulder. Missed the entire 2012 season.

April 17, 2012: Mark Teixeira diagnosed with flu-like symptoms. Day to day.

April 18, 2012: Brett Gardner diagnosed with sore right shoulder. Missed the rest of the 2012 regular season, returned during ALCS series.

April 29, 2012: Nick Swisher left the game with a tight left hamstring. Day to day.

May 3, 2012: Eric Chavez diagnosed with concussion. 7-Day DL.

May 4, 2012: Mariano Rivera diagnosed with torn ACL. Missed the rest of the 2012 season.

May 14, 2012: David Robertson diagnosed with sore left oblique. 15-Day DL

June 16, 2012: Nick Swisher left the game with a left quad contusion. Day to day.

June 25, 2012: CC Sabathia diagnosed with left groin strain. 15-Day DL.

June 28, 2012: Andy Pettitte diagnosed with fractured left ankle. 60-Day DL.

July 23, 2012: Yankees trade minor league pitchers D.J Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to Seattle Mariners for OF Ichiro Suzuki.

July 25, 2012: Alex Rodriguez diagnosed with non-displaced fracture in left hand. 15-Day DL.

July 25, 2012: Nick Swisher diagnosed with strained left hip flexor. Day to Day.

August 9, 2012: CC Sabathia diagnosed with left elbow soreness. 15-Day DL.

August 17, 2012: Mark Teixeira diagnosed with sore left wrist. Day to Day.

August 22, 2012: Ivan Nova diagnosed with right shoulder tightness. 15-Day DL.

August 27, 2012: Mark Teixeira diagnosed with strained left calf. Day to day.

September 2, 2012: Curtis Granderson diagnosed with right hamstring tendinitis. Day to Day.

September 9, 2012: Mark Teixeira diagnosed with strained left calf. Day to day.

October 3, 2o12: New York Yankees clinch the AL East pennant after the Tampa Bay Rays won 4-1 vs. the Baltimore Orioles and the Yankees won 14-2 vs. the Boston Red Sox. Yankees also clinched the best record in the American League giving them home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

October 12, 2012: New York Yankees win the ALDS vs. the Baltimore Orioles 3 games to 2.

October 13, 2012: Derek Jeter diagnosed with a fractured left ankle. Out for rest of ALCS series.

October 16, 2012: Phil Hughes diagnosed with back stiffness. Out for rest of ALCS series.

October 18, 2012: New York Yankees are eliminated from 2012 playoffs after getting swept by the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS.

Well, there’s a list of all the injuries, trades and signings for the Yankees during the 2012 season. Will 2013 bring the Yankees better luck and maybe a World Series Championship. In 6 weeks the quest will begin and the Yankees will start to Chase for 28 once again. But until then, Happy Holidays and Happy New Years to all.
