Granderson breaks right forearm, to be out 10 weeks

Granderson breaks right forearm, to be out 10 weeks

by fishjam25

Terrible news for the Yankees.  Granderson was hit by a pitch in his first At Bat today and X-Rays revealed he has a fracture in his right forearm.  The Yanks could ill-afford to lose his power and will now have to scramble to replace Granderson.  In-house options include veterans in camp on Minor-lg deals such as Juan Rivera & Thomas Neal, veteran minor-leaguers like Cubans Ronnier Mustelier & Adonis Garcia as well as their 2 highest ranking OF prospects Zoilo Almonte & Melky Mesa.

If he’s out for 10 weeks, that would bring him back during the first week in May.  They could go out and look to bring in a veteran OF like Alfonso Soriano but if Granderson will only miss approximately 5 weeks, do they want to bring in a significant player?  I think they need to be patient and look at the in-house options before doing anything hasty.  A platoon of  Rivera or Mustelier from the Right Side and Zoilo from the left side might not be a bad idea.  Sure would be nice to have Chris Dickerson right about now!

Red Sox pluck Yankees Colbrunn to be Hitting Coach

by fishjam25

The Red Sox named Greg Colbrunn their hitting coach yesterday filling out new manager John Farrell’s staff.  Colbrunn has spent the last 6 years as a coach in the Yankees minor-league system, most recently as the hitting coach for the Class A Charleston River Dogs.  Boston had explored hiring Tino Martinez before he took the job with the Marlins.  Colbrunn  was a Major League player for 13 seasons but this is his first MLB coaching job.  I had the privilige to interview Colbrunn for our site earlier this year (see interview here)  regarding a lot of the Yankees minor-league hitters.  At that time he said he remained with the River Dogs in order to stay close to his family since he lives in nearby Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  This is a great hire by the Red Sox and a loss for the Yankees organization but I wish Colbrunn the best of luck……except when he plays the Yankees of course.

Robinson Cano becomes a U.S Citizen

Robinson Cano becomes a U.S Citizen

By Delia E.

During the offseason, it gives players a chance to think either about free agency, what they could do different the next year or what they’re going to do all winter. For Robinson Cano, the offseason was a chance for him to officially become a United States citizen.

“Very proud day for me. I just became a U.S Citizen, God Bless America.” Cano tweeted earlier Tuesday morning. He even put a picture of him getting sworn in.

Cano, 30 is from the Dominican Republic. Congratulations Robinson Cano on officially being a U.S Citizen. Must have been a good day for you.

Yankees expect Kuroda to decline qualifying offer

Yankees expect Kuroda to decline qualifying offer

By Delia E.

A week after giving Hiroki Kuroda a 1 year, $13.3 Million qualifying offer, Brian Cashman and the Yankees expect that Kuroda will decline the offer. Although nothing is official yet, Cashman did speak with Kuroda’s agent unofficially. The other two players that were offered a contract (Nick Swisher, Rafael Soriano) will decline. Soriano is most likely gone from the team since the Yankees refuse to spend $26 Million on the closer role that will now become Mariano Rivera’s in the 2013 season.

Rivera tells Cashman he wants to come back

by: fishjam25

“Rivera contacted us and wants to play,” Cashman told The New York Post.

No real suprise but puts to bed any speculation that Mo might retire.  Now they have to agree to a dollar amount.  I don’t think Mo will get the $15M he got last year but maybe $10-12M with a chance to earn more in games finished incentives.  Whatever it is, sign him up – it’s 1 year and doesn’t impact austerity plans for 2014.

ALCS Game 4 Yankees @ Tigers game postponed

ALCS Game 4 Yankees @ Tigers game postponed

By Delia E.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Tonight’s Game 4 of the ALCS between the Yankees & Tigers has been postponed due to inclement weather and to “preserve the full 9 innings” Game 4 has been rescheduled to tomorrow afternoon at 4:07pm. However, because of the unexpected off-day CC Sabathia will not be able to start Game 7 should the series go that far. Have a good evening everyone.

Manny Banuelos to have Tommy John Surgery

Manny Banuelos to have Tommy John Surgery

By Delia E.

The Yankees have just announced that Manny Banuelos will have Tommy John Surgery on Thursday after missing most of the season with elbow injuries. The procedure will be done by Dr. James Andrews. Banuelos is scheduled to miss the 2013 season which was somewhat of a blow for the Yankees since he could have been an inexpensive rotation fixture come 2014.

Blue Jays vs. Yankees Game: Postponed

By Delia E.

Good evening everyone. Tonight’s Yankees / Blue Jays game has been postponed. There will be a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:05pm and at 7:05pm. There’s still lots of baseball to watch with the Red Sox & Rays and the Orioles and Mariners (that’s at 10pm however). Enjoy the night everyone and get ready for a long day of Yankees Baseball tomorrow.

Update: Andy Pettitte will start the day game of the doubleheader while David Phelps will start the nightcap.

Bartolo Colon suspended for testosterone use

Bartolo Colon suspended for testosterone use

By Delia E.

The Office of Commissioner of Baseball released details that Oakland Atheltics pitcher Bartolo Colon received a 50 game suspension without pay after he tested positive for Testosterone, with him becoming the second former Yankee in a week to get suspended. Colon’s suspension is effective immediately.

Here is the statement that Colon released following his suspension: “I apologize to the fans, to my teammates and to the Oakland A’s. I accept responsibility for my actions and I will serve my suspension as required by the Joint Drug Program.”

Michael Pineda busted for DUI

Michael Pineda busted for DUI

By Delia E.

Michael Pineda once again made headlines for the Yankees during the 2012 season but this time it had nothing to do with his progress of returning to the mound. Pineda, who had season ending surgery prior to the 2012 season and has yet to throw a pitch for the Yankees, was arrested and charged with DUI in Tampa, Florida at around 2:45 this morning. The arresting office wrote in the arrest report that he was able to “smell the distinct odor of alcohol while talking with Pineda.”

For Pineda to make this much of a commotion without throwing a single pitch for the Yankees is quite disturbing and brings unwanted attention to the front office.

Courtesy of Marc Carig of the Star Ledger, here is Michael Pineda’s mug shot.

The Yankees declined to comment about Pineda’s arrest but I’m sure the Yankees aren’t to happy with him at the moment.

CC sent to 15-day Disabled List with Sore Elbow

Per NJ.com, Sabathia has been complaining of stifness in his elbow since August 3rd against Seattle.  But an MRI showed no damage and the pain subsided.  However, it stiffened up again vs Detroit.  Now it makes sense why Girardi had a quick hook with CC.  Girardi claims the team is being extra careful with their ace and if it was October he would probably make his Monday start.  That is a good sign at least but anytime your horse has an elbow injury it has to scare the crap out of you.  CC has been so durable throughout his career, but the Yankees have to be concerned and take the conservative approach with a 6 game lead.

Phelps to start Monday / Derek Lowe Signed

David Phelps will start on Monday in CC’s place.  Phelps has been dominating the last 6 weeks with a 0.60 ERA over his last 8 games.  In 15 innings, he’s allowed just 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 22.  He’s made 3 starts on the year, with a 2.08 combined ERA and 16 Ks over 13 ip.  He’ll likely be limited to 3-5 innings since he isn’t stretched out.

To back Phelps up and provide depth, the team has signed veteran Derek Lowe.  Lowe was cut by Cleveland after a disastorous season.  He’s gone 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA and has allowed a whopping 201 baserunners in 119 ip.  Lowe will be in the pen on Monday to back-up Phelps. Ryota Igarishi will take CC’s roster spot tomorrow in Toronto.

Slight setback for Pettitte; Tyler Austin removed from game in Tampa

Slight setback for Pettitte; Tyler Austin removed from game in Tampa

by Fishjam

Apparently Andy Pettitte over did it in Seattle with his throwing program and will have to back it off a bit.  He had been throwing up to 55 pitches on flat ground but experienced a good deal of swelling in the ankle so he has been trying to stay off his feet.  Per ESPNs Andrew Marchand:

“Doc said he was hoping it would be healed a little better than it was,” Pettitte said. “The first two weeks it healed really quick and I feel like we have slowed down a little bit. He said, ‘Let’s try to stay off it a little bit.’ That is where we are at.”

In Minor League News, Tyler Austin was removed from a game in Tampa today after suffering an unknown injury.  I was listening to the game on MILB Gameday Audio and Austin hurt himself jumping against the RF fence trying to rob a home run.  There was about a 5 minute delay while he was attended to but he remained in the game.  He then Doubled in the bottom of the inning (2nd inn) but was removed after that.  No official news on the injury yet.  Austin just returned to action on 7/25th after missing about 3 weeks and the Futures Game with a concussion.  He was 2 for 2 today to raise his Tampa average to .300 (6 for 20) and is now hitting .322 with 15 HRs, 17 SBs and a 1.003 OPS for the season.

Broken Hand for A-Rod

Broken Hand for ARod

by fishjam25

Alex Rodriguez got drilled by a Felix Rodriguez pitch tonight in the 8th inning and was in serious pain.  X-Rays revealed he has a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his left hand.  No timetable for his return will be known until he sees doctors in New York today.  However, Eric Chavez said he had the same injury and was out for 8 weeks.  If that is accurate, he’d be looking at a late September return which is obviously terrible news.  Minor league seasons would be over so there would be no rehab games to prepare and I highly doubt he would be 100% for the post-season.

Chavez is the immediate choice to replace Alex and the Yanks also have Laynce Nix who could platoon with Chavez. However, Chavez has been playing a lot more than planned already and has been very injury prone his whole career.  Thus, it would be risky to let the trade deadline pass without making a move to bolster the position.  The internal options are as follows:

  • Ramiro Pena  – a total zero offensively hitting .253/.304/.320/.624 in AAA
  • Brandon Laird – solid D with some pop but hitting .249/.310/.408/.718 in AAA with 10 HRs/25 doubles
  • Eduardo Nunez – erratic D but good offensively. Just came off DL, has 6 minor lg games under his belt so could return soon however they have been using him at SS only.  Has made 48 starts at 3B in MLB with 9 errors for a brutal .920 Fielding%
  • Kevin Russo – AAA OF/2B/3B hitting .302/.365/.365/.731 could provide depth as a utility player
  • Ronier Mustelier – Ripping the ball in AAA but he’s been on the Disabled List, not sure when he’ll return
  • Corban Joseph & David Adams can both hit but are mediocre defensive Second Baseman who played 3B sparingly in A ball

On the trade market, Hanley Ramirez was just dealt to the Dodgers so the biggest name is Chase Headley who has drawn a lot of interest and would cost several prospects.  I really like Headley and he could be the 3B for the future for the Yank with ARod moving to DH next yr.  Headley also plays OF so he could play some LF/RF is ARod does come back healthy soon.  But I don’t think Cashman will be that bold.  Placido Polanco may be available but his offensive numbers have really gone down the last 2 years.  Marco Scutaro makes some sense as he could be a Utility Infielder/backup SS also but he hasn’t played 3B since 2008.

Headley is the best 3B on the market with a 121 OPS+ this year and it jumps to 143 away from pitchers-paradise PetCo.  He’s a switch-hitting 28-yr old under team control through 2014 and is a career .300 hitter away from PetCo so would likely cost 1 premium prospect to headline a package.

Yankees Acquire Ichiro Suzuki

Yankees Acquire Ichiro Suzuki

According to Jack Curry, the Yankees and Mariners have agreed on a trade to send Ichiro Suzuki to the Yankees in exchange for D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. Also, Joel Sherman is reporting that the Yankees will pay just more than $2 million of what is left on Ichiro’s salary.  Ichiro is batting .261 on the season, with 4 HR’s, 28 RBI, and a .642 OPS. The general consensus seems to be that the Yankees got Ichiro for next to nothing.

2012 5th Round pick Robert Refsnyder to start career in Charleston

2012 5th Round pick Robert Refsnyder to start career in Charleston

by Matt S.

From the Yankees MILB.com page, 2012 5th round pick Robert Refsnyder is to start his career with the Charleston River Dogs. He was just named the Most Outstanding Player in the College World Series. Here is some information on Refsnyder from the article:

Refsnyder was selected by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2012 Draft with the 187th overall selection following his junior year, and is expected to make his professional debut Tuesday night with the RiverDogs.  This past season he batted .364 with eight home runs and 66 RBIs and also stole 14 bases in 65 games, earning a spot on the Pac-12 All-Conference squad.  He was also named to the All-Pac-12 Conference first team following a sophomore season that saw him tie for the conference lead in RBIs.
